The UK government has extended the Seasonal Worker visa route for five years, until 2029. “This decision was made to provide businesses with the opportunity to plan effectively, invest in automation, and transition away from a dependence on migrant labor.”

The government is addressing labor shortages in the food supply chain by financing technology to reduce the reliance on migrant labor and providing certainty and clarity for farms and other food businesses throughout the UK.

The government will implement a series of new measures to support the industry in response to John Shropshire’s Independent Review into Labour Shortages in the Food Supply Chain. These consist of:

  • Businesses will be granted an additional five years to plan effectively by extending the seasonal worker visa route until 2029.
  • Up to £50 million in additional funding will be provided to support the development of new technology that will enable completely automated packhouses. Additional support will be provided in the future to ensure that robotic crop pickers are on par with human pickers within the next three to five years.
  • Developing a comprehensive strategy to attract domestic laborers and improve the provision of skills.
  • To enter the United Kingdom and engage in employment, you may apply for a Seasonal Worker visa.
  • Horticulture for a period of up to six months, such as the collection of flowers or fruits.
  • In the same year, poultry was produced from October 2 to December 31.

Details of UK Seasonal Worker Visa Extended for 5-Years:

You are required to apply for poultry Seasonal Worker visas by November 15 of each year. Horticulture Seasonal Worker visas are available at any time of the year.

You must satisfy the other eligibility criteria and have a sponsor. The Temporary Worker – Seasonal Worker visa (T5) has been superseded by this visa.

To address this imminent need, the seasonal worker visa route has been extended for five years from 2025 to 2029, allowing farmers and growers to invest in automation and transition away from a reliance on migrant labor. In 2025, the horticulture sector will have access to 43,000 visas, while poultry will have access to an additional 2,000 visas.

The government has increased its support for the use of automation in the sector to reduce the reliance on migrant workers and has implemented measures to encourage British workers to enter the agricultural sector.

This will commence with the immediate task of fully automating a group of significant packhouses within the next 12 to 18 months. This will enhance comprehension of the government support required to make fully automated packhouses universally viable.

Additionally, the government will collaborate with technology companies to expedite the advancement of mechanized crop harvesters, to achieve prototypes that are comparable to human pickers within the next three to five years. This will further enhance the UK’s food supply chain to be the most advanced in the world.

The announcement follows the Prime Minister’s announcement of the largest-ever round of farming grants at the NFU Conference earlier this year. The total amount of £427 million available to farmers is double the investment in productivity initiatives.

Environment Secretary Steve Barclay asserts, “We have a world-class food and drink sector, and the measures announced today will bolster this by increasing funding for the cutting-edge technology that will reduce reliance on migrant labor in the long term.”
